Korakrit takes you to a fun, fun place.

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Walking into a room full of neon colors, black lights and stuffed animals might make you think you think you went back in time to the early 90s. However, it is more likely, and much more exciting that you are in the middle of a Korakrit installation (jock jams included). The Brooklyn based, Thai artist, who studied printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design, creates wonderful worlds full of mystical animals, bright colors and memories that reflect on the artists’ goal to “take you to this fun, fun place.”

When Korakrit works he is not simply creating a piece to look at, he is creating an experience. His animated lines brings the audience into a world that is moving with them. There is no passive audience.

The viewer is not the only one who interacts with the pieces. Korakrit introduces a high level of physicality while making his art work — he pushes, stands and jumps on screens as he makes prints. These actions make his pieces seem like something in between “fighting and dancing.”

If you want to learn more about Korakrit’s process, keep an eye out for an exclusive interview, right here on Curbs and Stoops. Also, stay tuned for an limited edition print with Curbs and Stoops coming out in the near future. You can check out Korakrit’s work on his website here.

Tim Okamura at Show and Tell

Be sure to check out the opening exhibition “Love, Strength, & Soul” at Show and Tell Gallery featuring the work of New York based artist, Tim Okamura and Calgary based artist, The Kid Belo up from October 9 until November in Toronto.

“The exhibition investigates the thematic content of the title through Okamura’s gritty realism, and detailed depictions of inner-city subjects, and TheKidBelo’s boldly precise and often colorful architectural letterforms. At once complimentary and divergent, these two artists’ contrasting styles also serve to echo the wide variance found in the emotional associations with Love, Strength, and Soul – from subtle displays of altruism to resolute courage to introspective ponderance.”

The particularly interesting part of the combination of these two artist is that they are perpetually responding to urban landscapes – their work is colorful yet grim and reflects to the same conditions in urban life.

To find out more about the gallery please go to their website at “www.showandtellgallery.com” Check out Okamura’s work here.
