Daniel Arango : The Higher Power of the Holy K
October 9th, 2011 by Maria Anderson
Daniel Arango is traveling indefinitely. He keeps us updated with a running dialogue of his journey in lines like these:
Drawing comfortably at Tea Lounge in Grunerløkka.
Five Hours Spent Drawing Oslo Disciple’s Hair.
Holy K rests for a day. Holy K gets a two hour massage.
Oslo Disciple found! Great photo shoot day- we rode all day in his sexy 1976 MGB convertible.
Holy K Run through the mountain tops of Aurlandsvegen. Unforgettable winds and neon greens.
This New York-based artist is on a mission to spread the word of Holy K and amass a group of loyal followers. He has left the city behind for this world tour, leaving his studio behind as well to draw fresh inspiration from the real world. Arango works with a MacBook Pro, an iPhone, and his Holy K Grail cereal box. The idea is this: in each city, Arango will complete at least one commissioned Holy K cereal box portrait for someone living there. He calls these people his Disciples. His Disciple drawing is sent back to his New York studio, where the cereal box is created and then sent overseas in tangible form to the person who inspired it. Along the way, he’s creating a video with his iPhone that he updates continually on his website.
Arango is one example of an artist using structured travel as a way to generate inspiration for his work and to broaden the scope of his influence. Here we see him with a group of Norwegian bovines making their way toward the Holy K. I wrote about Arango back in April (here), and was pleased to see his work and the ways in which it adapts to a life on the road.
The boxes he creates are intricately done and beautifully etched. The Holy K cereal box becomes a portrait of the individual Disciples and takes on their names, displaying their image on the front of the box. The Nutrition Facts area contains information about the individual, and the backside of the box is a highly detail drawing. The boxes can be etched in any size and made in black, white or clear Lucite, brass, gold or leather. Do you recognize the convertible below?
