Quick Glance:
“I thought that it wouldn’t work at all in a radio environment, but the station wanted to do the feature and the response from the listeners was actually very positive. A label even approached me afterwards. I think I have changed my mind about it now and there will be an audio-only release soon. But either way, visual or not, the story of how the music was generated is important. It’s half the experience. The visual part is actually just explaining and stressing the idea, but it also works if you just tell the story alongside the music.”

Quick Glance:
“I don’t really worry about the difference between the digital and physical sides of my process because they are both things that are equally important to me. My entire life has been mediated by technology. I’ve been playing video games, using computers for as long as I can remember. I got my first Atari from a KB Toys fire sale when I was 4. They are both integral parts of the way I have always processed experience. There is something specific that happens when you put brush to material though. I suppose the digital side of things is definitely the pragmatic side, while the romance comes from the physical, analog side. I need a lot more space (and time) to properly figure this out but that’s a good start.”

Beth Wexler

December 2011

Providence, RI

Quick Glance:
“There’s really so much to be said about remixing, and so many different ways to approach it. Lately, I have been looking at it is as a way of deconstructing and reconstructing. I’ve been really into getting into the fine details and remixing those. In the past, I would make videos and remix chunks of frames, which I think is what most people associate with remix, moving whole parts around, and reorganizing them to disrupt the initial flow or narrative and build something similarly new. This retains the familiarity of the source material. But I’ve been trying to approach the remix on a more fundamental level. So rather than remix chunks of content, I’ve been breaking each frame down and remixing that. I’ll start with a frame of video, and maybe lower the resolution of it, so I don’t have as many pixels to work with, but ultimately, I’m trying to reorganize that frame of pixels. So it completely changes the content. It’s a different approach, but at the core, it’s still remixing.”
