Style Wars Uses Kickstarter to Restore Outtakes
November 13th, 2011 by Toussaint Wallace
Directed by Tony Silver and produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, Style Wars is an indispensable documentary that captured NYC Street culture in the beginning of the 1980s. Style Wars was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival. The film captures a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded from a city of crisis into the world.
Style Wars was originally edited from about 30 hours of 16 mm film shot in 1981 and 1982. The original footage is damaged and fading. Fortunately, Henry Chalfant is fundraising on KickStarter to repair the film using digital technology. It will cost $28,000 to save and restore the outtakes. Saving the best outtakes will restore the entire negative of the film and make an HD master which will preserve the record of the first painted trains in their original vivid colors.
